One of the nicest things about the B+W ND 10-stop Filter is it can be used for HDR as well. I must say bracketing with this is a real treat, as I get to time my brackets with a stop watch in bulb mode. Usually during the day 2-4 second exposures with the black glass filter will result in the darkest bracket. From there I will double the time on each additional bracket until I end up with all the details in the shadows. One thing I’ve noticed while using this filter, is it’s sensitivity to light over 60 seconds. Once you start capturing 1-2 minute exposures, every 10-20 seconds can really make or break your brackets. I found that doubling the brackets over 60 seconds to 120,240,480 seconds to be too bright in the highlights. I decided to adjust my timing as follows: 2,4,8,15,30,60,80,160 then 320 seconds for the 8th and final bracket, giving me just the right amount of luminance throughout the scene.
I think that highlight information is the most sensitive. Since using the black glass filter and experimenting with exposure times in the high end, it’s opened my brain to more critical thinking next time I’m out shooting. Maybe instead of 1EV at the top I can experiment with trying 1/3 or even 2/3 down or even up for that extra reach without going overboard!
